The Value of Value Identification in Web Applications

Abstract

Every technology triggers changes when it is inserted in an environment. Understanding the role of human values in technology design is a key factor for the development of technologies that make sense to people and do not produce side effects that harm them. Applications publicly available on the Web, notably the so-called social software, are worldwide diffused and used, generating far-reaching and unforeseen consequences. The explicit concern on values is not a common practice in technology design, in part, due to the lack of informed methods that support designers in this subject. In this paper, we present the Value Comparison Table, an artifact that supports designers in a value-oriented analysis of social software. A case study illustrates the use of this artifact to compare four different web applications regarding the values they promote or inhibit according to the way they were designed. The Value Comparison Table showed to be a promising artifact for supporting designers in the complex scenario of designing value aware technologies.






Technologies trigger impacts on the environment in which they are inserted and on the people that live in it. Interactive systems are a reality in people's lives, being used through different devices for different purposes, in different contexts, with unpredictable and far-reaching consequences. In this complex scenario, it is necessary to rethink our practices, tools and theories in order to consider human values and cultural issues in an explicit way. There is also a necessary shift in our position while researchers, scientists and practitioners, approaching fundamental problems that can contribute to the society. In this position paper, we claim for such a position change and argue for a socially responsible design of technologies, keeping universal human values in mind and paying attention to cultural issues.

Values and cultural aspects must be considered for providing design solutions that make sense to people. Although there is influential literature work devoted to the subject of values and culture in design, there is still a lack of principled and light-weighted artifacts and methods to support designers in this task. In this paper we propose two artifacts for supporting designers in making explicit both stakeholders’ values and system’s requirements in design. We situate our discussion in a case study where the artifacts were used to support the design of seven prototypes of applications for Interactive Digital Television in the Brazilian context. The results were promising and indicated the artifacts’ usefulness to support designers in dealing with values and cultural aspects in design activities.

Academic literature has indicated a new moment for the HCI field that requires it to revisit methods and practices to consider aspects that are difficult to deal with, such as human values and culture. Although recognized as important and a challenge for HCI, human values is still a topic that demands investigation, discussion, and practical results (theoretical, methodological, technical) so that it may become somewhat useful for HCI as both a discipline and a community. This paper presents an informed discussion in which we explore possible understandings for values in HCI, the importance of the topic, and existing approaches. We draw on the literature and on our own research experiences in the topic to develop critical discussions and suggest possible directions for advancing the research and practice in the context of this challenge. This one-day, embedded workshop will explore the design intersections of human values and internet of things (IoT) applications. In a day-long session we will configure and build small IoT devices (using the Particle platform), then deploy them to collect, share and publish the data they harvest throughout the conference. During the conference program we will reconvene to debate how a world of connected devices intersects with human values (such as privacy and transparency) and to articulate the specific challenges for designing a value-conscious IoT.

Evaluating interactive systems is becoming an increasingly complex challenge. As information and communication technology have left the context of offices and workplaces to pervade every aspect of people's personal and social lives, issues such as emotional and affective aspects, sociability, culture and human values are now in play and must be explicitly considered. This situation is very different from what designers and researchers have experienced before, and requires new methods, techniques and tools to support them in producing solutions aligned with the new demands of a digital age. In this paper we focus on values and culture in the evaluation of interactive systems, presenting the eValue — an artifact we created to support designers in a culturally informed and value-oriented evaluation. To situate our discussion in a practical context, we present a case study where the artifact was used to evaluate seven prototypes of social applications for the Brazilian Interactive Digital Television.

An increasing number of everyday objects are now connected to the internet, collecting and sharing information about us: the "Internet of Things" (IoT). However, as the number of "social" objects increases, human concerns arising from this connected world are starting to become apparent. This paper presents the results of a preliminary qualitative study in which five participants lived with an ambiguous IoT device that collected and shared data about their activities at home for a week. In analyzing this data, we identify the nature of human and socio-technical concerns that arise when living with IoT technologies. Trust is identified as a critical factor - as trust in the entity/ies that are able to use their collected information decreases, users are likely to demand greater control over information collection. Addressing these concerns may support greater engagement of users with IoT technology. The paper concludes with a discussion of how IoT systems might be designed to better foster trust with their owners.

Cultural aspects such as values, beliefs, and behavioral patterns influence the way technology is understood and used, and the impact it may cause on the environment and on people. Although there is influential literature devoted to the subject of values and culture in Human-Computer Interaction, there is still a lack of principled and practical artifacts and methods to support researchers and practitioners in their activities. In this paper, we present a Value-oriented and Culturally Informed Approach (VCIA) to sensitize and support Computer Science and Engineering professionals in taking values and culture into consideration throughout the design of interactive systems. The approach is grounded on theoretical and methodological bases of Organizational Semiotics, Building Blocks of Culture, and Socially Aware Computing. VCIA offers a set of artifacts and methods articulated to support the design process in its different stages and activities: from the identification of stakeholders and their values, to the organization of requirements and the evaluation of the designed solution. In this paper, we present VCIA's principles, artifacts, and illustrate its usefulness in bringing values into consideration, supporting a socially aware system design.

Social software is a growing reality worldwide, while the design of systems that promote and keep users’ participation and reflect a respect to users’ culture and values is still a challenging task. In this chapter, the authors revisit the concept of Cognitive Authority as a means for supporting better social interactions on the Web. To revisit this concept, they draw on the Value Pie: an artifact that favors the analysis and informed discussion about values and culture in social software. In order to situate the discussion in a practical setting, the authors present a case study related to the design of a social network system intended to support the constitution of a network of authorities. The case study shows examples of how values and cultural aspects influence the way a computational feature must be designed to make sense to its users.

Este artigo apresenta o relato de uma experiência no ensino de IHC em um curso de Especialização em Engenharia de Software. Neste curso, todas as disciplinas se comunicam direta ou indiretamente por meio de um projeto comum no qual devem ser aplicadas as atividades práticas de cada disciplina. A disciplina de IHC, com 24 horas, visa capacitar os alunos no entendimento dos usuários e de suas necessidades e na prototipação de soluções. Os alunos, profissionais atuantes na indústria, normalmente não possuem contato prévio com a área de IHC, reforçando a responsabilidade da disciplina na formação profissional e na clarificação/disseminação de IHC enquanto área de atuação. Este artigo relata o modo como a disciplina foi trabalhada, as técnicas e ferramentas utilizadas, e apresenta os resultados de duas avaliações sobre a disciplina que indicam a sua aceitação por parte dos alunos.
